Groton honors longtime town leader

A decade of steady leadership earned Don Scheffler a standing ovation as Groton honored his 10 years as town supervisor, according to Tompkins Weekly. Scheffler stepped down at the end of 2025 after more than 25 years on the Town Board.

Scheffler oversaw issues ranging from zoning battles and fracking debates to budgets and recreation projects, earning a 2025 Cornell Town-Gown Award along the way. He said solar farm siting and state overrides of local control proved his biggest frustration.

New supervisor Crystal Young took office Jan. 1, calling the transition seamless as Groton moves forward under new leadership.
