New York opens 1M for transit upgrades

New York is putting $121 million on the table to help modernize public transportation systems across the state.

The funding, available through the Transit Ready NY program, targets counties, local municipalities, and regional transit authorities outside the MTA system. Applications are open through May 21, 2026, and support capital projects designed to upgrade facilities, improve service coordination, and deploy new technology.

State officials say the goal is to make public transit more efficient, accessible, and reliable—especially in regions where aging infrastructure and limited service remain barriers.

Focus on modernization and access

Transit Ready NY prioritizes projects that boost operational efficiency, expand service levels, and support regional coordination, particularly for rural transit providers. Projects that reduce fleet emissions will also receive priority, aligning with New York’s broader push to cut transportation-related emissions.

All funded projects must have a useful service life of at least 10 years.

Eligible projects include new or upgraded transit centers and mobility hubs, transit-priority infrastructure on roadways, technology upgrades that improve rider experience or operations, pedestrian improvements that make it easier to reach transit, new stops and shelters, and upgrades to bus garages and facilities.

Who can apply

The State Department of Transportation administers the program. Funding is open to counties and local municipalities designated as Pro-Housing Communities under state requirements.

Applications must be submitted by May 21, 2026. Additional details and application materials are available through the Department of Transportation.

State transportation leaders say the investment reflects a long-term strategy to connect people to jobs, services, and key destinations while strengthening local economies statewide.
