Water conservation order issued after line break at Five Points

A water line break at Five Points Correctional Facility has triggered a mandatory conservation order across several Seneca County water systems.

The Seneca County Health Department and the Seneca County Water District issued the order Jan. 31 after officials said the water supply is being depleted. The order took effect immediately and remains in place until further notice.

The conservation order affects customers served by the Seneca County Water District, Fayette Water Districts #5 and #8, Romulus Water District, and Varick Water Districts #1 and #3.

Officials warn that some users could experience a complete loss of water pressure during the emergency. Crews continue working to maintain enough water for drinking and fire suppression.

Health officials said the order serves as an advisory urging residents to limit water use as much as possible while repairs continue. They also asked residents to cooperate to avoid a more serious emergency.

Residents served by the affected water systems are asked to conserve water in several ways. Officials recommend running dishwashers and washing machines only with full loads and avoiding running water while rinsing dishes or brushing teeth.

They also suggest taking shorter showers, checking faucets, pipes, and toilets for leaks, and using bottled drinking water kept in the refrigerator instead of running the tap. Using disposable plates and utensils can also help reduce water use.
