A snow squall set off a chain of crashes involving about 40 vehicles on the Thruway in Batavia, state police said.
Troopers said the weather-related collisions happened Thursday afternoon, Jan. 29, on I-90 westbound near Exit 48.
Police said four people went to Erie County Medical Center and two went to United Memorial Medical Center-Batavia with minor injuries.
At the same time, more than a dozen vehicles crashed in minor incidents on the eastbound side, which forced a diversion at Exit 48A, police said.
Crews spent several hours clearing the roadway while multiple light and heavy tows removed vehicles, according to state police.
State police thanked Pembroke Fire and EMS departments, the Genesee County Office of Emergency Operations and the New York State Thruway Authority maintenance crews for assisting at the scene.
All westbound and eastbound lanes reopened by 8:30 a.m. Friday, police said.
