Steuben lawmakers get inside look at jail

Steuben County lawmakers walked through the Steuben County Jail this week to see how it really runs, according to county officials.

Jim Allard invited legislators to tour the facility Wednesday so they could better understand daily operations, staffing demands, and how taxpayer money supports the jail. Leaders reviewed inmate intake, housing procedures, and the challenges correction officers face each day.

The guided tour came from supervisors with the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office, who explained how policy decisions directly affect safety, resources, and workflow inside the jail.

County officials said the visit reinforced their focus on transparency, responsible spending, and closer collaboration between lawmakers and law enforcement.
