Former Canandaigua mayor keeps wedding role

She’s officiated hundreds of “I dos,” and she’s not done yet. Canandaigua’s City Council voted to keep former mayor Ellen Polimeni performing weddings, according to the Finger Lakes Times.

The council reappointed Ellen Polimeni, 84, as a city marriage officer at its Jan. 26 meeting. State law allows cities to name marriage officers beyond the sitting mayor, letting Polimeni continue a role she called one of her favorites in office.

Polimeni will serve without pay through the end of 2027. She began officiating weddings while mayor and continued after leaving office in 2019, marrying couples at City Hall, parks, and local landmarks.
