Lyons man charged in welfare fraud case

Deputies arrested a Town of Lyons man after an investigation into alleged welfare fraud uncovered misuse of food assistance benefits.

David Jones Jr., 42, of Phelps Street, faces charges of misuse of food stamps and petit larceny, according to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office .


Deputies say the investigation began after the Wayne County Department of Social Services flagged suspicious activity involving a Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program EBT card.

Investigators allege Jones allowed another person to use his EBT card to buy food items without authorization.

Deputies arrested Jones around 3:03 a.m. at 77 Water Street in Lyons.

Authorities transported him to the Wayne County Jail for processing and later released him on an appearance ticket.

Jones is scheduled to appear in Lyons Town Court on Feb. 10.

Wayne County Department of Social Services assisted deputies with the investigation.
