Auburn bomb threat leads to arrest

According to the Sheriff’s Office, staff at Auburn City Court received a phone call on Jan. 28 in which a man claimed there was a bomb inside the building. Court Security Officers immediately responded, swept the building, and determined no explosive device was present.

Investigators say staff later received a second phone call from the same individual making additional bomb threats.

A subsequent investigation determined Hamilton was responsible for the calls. Authorities also say Hamilton had reported a bomb threat at Cayuga County Mental Health the day prior, an incident investigated by the Auburn Police Department.

Hamilton was taken into custody by Auburn police and turned over to the Cayuga County Jail. On Jan. 29, he was formally charged with falsely reporting an incident in the first degree.

He was arraigned and remanded to the custody of the Cayuga County Jail, where he remains incarcerated.

The Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office reminded the public that all suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
