Snowmobile crash in Victory turns deadly

State police are investigating a fatal snowmobile crash that happened Tuesday afternoon in Cayuga County.

The collision occurred around 2:39 p.m. on Ira Station Road in the town of Victory, where a snowmobile and a town highway snowplow collided.

State police said a 49-year-old man was operating a 2022 Lynx snowmobile westbound on a designated snowmobile trail that crosses Ira Station Road. The trail has stop signs posted on both sides of the roadway.

Investigators said the snowmobile did not stop before entering the road. The machine crossed the northbound lane and struck the plow blade of a southbound Town of Victory highway snowplow.

After the initial impact, the snowmobile continued forward, struck a wooden utility pole with an attached electrical box, and caught fire, according to state police.

Emergency crews transported the snowmobile operator to Upstate University Hospital, where medical staff attempted life-saving measures. He was later pronounced dead.

The snowplow involved was a 2019 International Harvester operated by a 45-year-old man. State police said the driver was cooperative and showed no signs of impairment.

The New York State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit responded and processed the scene. The investigation remains ongoing.
