Ontario County Democrats donate winter clothing to local groups

A winter clothing drive organized by the Ontario County Democratic Committee delivered thousands of dollars’ worth of help to neighbors in need across Geneva and Canandaigua.

The effort collected an estimated $5,500 in coats, hats, and gloves for the Geneva Center of Concern and the St. Vincent de Paul Society, with donations split evenly between the two organizations.

County Democrats invited members, friends, and family to drop off gently used winter clothing during the committee’s December and January meetings. Organizers also placed donation boxes at locations throughout Geneva.

Eileen Cooley of Geneva said the timing mattered as families continue to struggle. “Our clothing drive was very successful during this continuing period of significant need, when many people have been hurt by our federal administration,” Cooley said. “Thanks to all who donated to our community.”

Karen Rosekrantz of Manchester said the response showed how deeply people care. “This winter is a very cold one—and our neighbors need help,” Rosekrantz said. “County Democrats have stepped up with warm clothes and warm hearts. The support for our neighbors this winter is extraordinary.”

The Geneva Center of Concern provides a food pantry, a thrift store, and its Operation Merry Christmas program, supported by volunteers. The St. Vincent de Paul Society operates as a fully volunteer-run organization offering person-to-person assistance, including food vouchers, clothing, and emergency help with rent and utilities.

Ontario County Democratic Committee Chair John Hurley said the drive reflects growing need in the county. “Too many families in Ontario County live below the poverty line, and with Republican cuts to housing and shelter, even more people need our help, just to survive through these dark times,” Hurley said. “I’m grateful that Democrats care about our communities and rally together to help those in need.”

The Ontario County Democratic Committee focuses on civic education and supporting Democratic candidates for public office, while promoting policies centered on fairness, compassion, and equal treatment under the law.
