Residents blasted Steuben County lawmakers over fears that ICE detainees could return to the local jail, according to Spectrum News.
The county voted 13–4 to renew its federal inmate housing contract, which raises the daily rate to $130 — but critics worry it opens the door to Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Speakers at the meeting cited recent deadly protests and called the agreement outdated and dangerous.
The sheriff said ICE detainees haven’t been held there in years and doesn’t expect that to change unless federal rules shift.
