Probe finds lax discipline for state troopers

A decade-long review uncovered how serious misconduct by New York State troopers often drew light or inconsistent punishment, according to The Ithaca Voice.

An investigation by The New York Times and New York Focus found the New York State Police lacks formal disciplinary guidelines, leaving punishment largely up to supervisors’ discretion. Records from 2014 to 2024 show troopers accused of excessive force, abusing authority, lying in reports, or having sex on duty often stayed on the job with minor penalties.

State Police officials say they began developing a formal discipline system in 2025, but critics warn weak accountability fuels repeat misconduct and shields officers from public scrutiny.
