GOP fights loss of NYC House seat

Republicans moved fast to challenge a court ruling that wiped out New York City’s only GOP-held House district, according to the Associated Press. The decision threatens Republican control of a seat with national stakes in the battle for Congress.

A judge ruled the Staten Island–Brooklyn district represented by Nicole Malliotakis was drawn to weaken Black and Hispanic voting power. The order forces New York’s Independent Redistricting Commission to produce a new map by Feb. 6.

Republicans appealed to two courts, including New York’s New York Court of Appeals, as part of a broader, national fight over gerrymandering that could reshape the 2026 House map.
