Fire destroys Palmyra home on Route 21

A Palmyra home was destroyed Monday afternoon after a fire tore through a residence on State Route 21.

Emergency crews were called to the scene at 12:56 p.m. following reports of a structure fire, according to the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office. Firefighters arrived to find the home heavily involved.

The Manchester Fire Department led the response, with assistance from the Port Gibson, Shortsville, and Manchester fire departments. Manchester Code Enforcement and Finger Lakes Ambulance also responded.

Officials later determined the home was a total loss.

Investigators say the fire is suspected to have started near a wood stove inside the home. Ontario County Fire Investigators will continue to examine the scene to determine the exact cause.

No people were injured in the fire. A cat was trapped inside the home and died.

The American Red Cross responded to help the occupants of the home with immediate needs following the fire.

Officials did not release further details as the investigation continues.
