A new program at Finger Lakes Community College aims to prepare students for careers in wine sales and hospitality without the focus on wine production.
FLCC announced Monday that the state Education Department has approved a new wine service management certificate designed for students interested in the business, marketing, and service side of the wine industry.
The program was developed by Jamie Rotter, an associate professor of culinary arts, who said it fills a gap between wine production and hospitality. Rotter said viticulture focuses on making wine, while hospitality focuses on selling and serving it, often alongside food and lodging.
“The program addresses a need in the industry in terms of service and marketing,” Rotter said. “There is a gap there, and this program bridges that gap.”
The 27-credit certificate includes courses in marketing, business law, culinary and beverage fundamentals, and three wine-focused classes. Students will also complete 300 hours of work experience at a hospitality business and learn directly from industry experts.
Most of the program can be completed online. Students can finish the certificate in one year of full-time study or over a longer period on a part-time schedule.
Graduates will qualify for jobs such as wine steward, food and beverage manager, wine marketer, and similar roles. Credits earned through the certificate can also be applied toward FLCC associate degrees in culinary arts or event and hospitality management.
