Bath man in custody after woman severely beaten, stabbed during domestic

Police arrested a Bath man after officers responded to a medical alarm and found a woman fleeing a home with severe injuries.

Village of Bath police and Bath Ambulance crews were called to a residence on Geneva Street on January 13 after an unknown medical alarm activation. When officers arrived, they noticed suspicious behavior inside the residence and saw a woman with serious wounds run outside seeking help.

Investigators determined a violent domestic incident had occurred inside the home. Police say the victim was severely beaten and stabbed during the assault.

Officers quickly located and arrested Dennis L. Smigiel, 42, of Bath. He was charged with second-degree assault, a Class D felony, and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, also a Class D felony. Police say additional charges are expected.

Smigiel was processed and transported to the Steuben County Jail for Centralized Arraignment Part Court. He is being held without bail. Police said Smigiel has four prior felony convictions in New York state.

The victim received medical treatment and is recovering, according to police.
