William Smith hockey overpowered by Cortland 

William Smith hockey fell 5-1 to Cortland in a SUNYAC contest Friday evening at The Cooler. The loss moved the Herons to 7-9-0 overall and 3-2-0 in conference play.

Senior forward Kelly Howe scored the lone goal for William Smith, finishing off a forced turnover below the goal line midway through the game. Junior goaltender Mia Iwicki started and made 27 saves over the first 40 minutes, while first-year Julia Echavarria stopped 12 shots in relief during the third period for William Smith Herons.

Cortland controlled much of the game offensively, holding a 44-21 edge in shots on goal. Kira Cook led the Red Dragons with two goals, opening the scoring early in the first period and adding an insurance tally in the third. Ainsley Delacourt and Carlen Bertrand each posted a goal and an assist, while Kate Mahoney recorded two assists. Cortland finished 1-for-2 on the power play, while William Smith was held scoreless on two power-play chances. Goaltender Eline Gillodes earned the win with 20 saves for Cortland Red Dragons.

Cortland built a 2-0 lead late in the first period before Howe cut the deficit to one early in the second. The Red Dragons responded with two goals in the middle frame to extend the margin to 4-1, then added a final goal midway through the third to close out the conference victory.
