Stolen vehicle recovery leads to arrest in Wayne County

State Police recovered a stolen vehicle and arrested a Wayne County woman following an investigation that began with an out-of-state alert.

New York State Police arrested Dakota Root, 24, of Lyons on Jan. 19 after troopers located a stolen SUV at a residence in the village of Newark.

Police say they received information from Pennsylvania State Police that Root was wanted on an active warrant and was believed to be driving a stolen vehicle in Wayne County. The vehicle, a 2021 Nissan Rogue, had been reported stolen out of Tioga County, Pennsylvania.

Troopers found Root and the vehicle at a home on Woodside Drive. Investigators say Root admitted to operating the vehicle and was in possession of the key at the time.

Police recovered and secured the vehicle without incident.

Root was taken into custody and charged with criminal possession of stolen property in the third degree, a felony, and fugitive from justice based on the Pennsylvania warrant.

Troopers processed Root at State Police Lyons and transported her to the Wayne County Jail for centralized arraignment proceedings.
