Second-alarm house fire draws regional response in Port Byron

Fire crews from across Cayuga County responded to a second-alarm house fire on Utica Street in the Village of Port Byron.

According to the Cayuga/Seneca Fire Wire, the call prompted a large, multi-agency response that included departments from Port Byron, Weedsport, Throop, Auburn, Montezuma, Jordan, and Aurelius, along with Auburn and Jordan city ambulance crews.

Fire officials reported smoke showing when crews arrived. The home was evacuated early in the incident as firefighters began attacking the blaze.

As conditions escalated, additional resources were requested. An Auburn truck company was assigned as the rapid intervention team, while multiple engines and crews worked inside the structure.

Firefighters were able to knock down the main body of fire, then conducted interior operations and primary searches. Officials reported no occupants located during searches.

Crews later vented the roof and continued working inside the home to address hot spots. Fire officials said conditions improved as operations continued.

The fire was declared out, though crews remained on scene for interior work and overhaul.

No injuries were reported in the updates provided, and the cause of the fire was not released.
