Welcome winter solstice under the stars

Crowds will gather after sunset at the Seneca Meadows Education Center as a winter solstice program invites families to explore the season and the night sky.

The free event, called “Welcome to the Winter Solstice,” takes place at 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23, at the education center in Waterloo. The program was originally scheduled for December but later moved to January.

Participants will learn about the seasons and winter constellations through hands-on activities and short videos. If skies are clear, organizers plan to head outside to observe the night sky.

The program welcomes all ages, including individuals, families, and under-served communities. Organizers encourage people to arrive by 5 p.m. at the Seneca Meadows Education Center at 1977 Route 414.

The Seneca Meadows Education Center and the Montezuma Audubon Center sponsor the event. Organizers say the goal is to connect the community with nature during one of the darkest times of the year.

More details and registration are available online. Questions can be directed to the Montezuma Audubon Center by phone or email.
