Inmate charged in Elmira prison assault

State Police arrested an incarcerated individual this month following a long-running investigation into a violent assault at Elmira Correctional Facility.

Oscar Fernandez, 50, faces multiple felony charges tied to an attack that left another incarcerated individual with severe head injuries, according to New York State Police.

State Police said they were first notified of the assault in September, when the victim required emergency medical treatment. The individual was transported to multiple medical facilities and remains in critical condition.

Investigators from the State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation led a lengthy probe alongside the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision and the Chemung County District Attorney’s Office. Authorities identified Fernandez as a suspect as the investigation progressed.

On January 5, State Police obtained a Superior Court warrant charging Fernandez with attempted murder in the second degree, assault in the first degree, and assault in the second degree.

Fernandez is currently incarcerated at Elmira Correctional Facility. Troopers took him into custody on the warrant, and police said he will be produced for arraignment in Chemung County Court.

State Police said the investigation remains ongoing.
