A longtime mall staple is shutting down after nearly 50 years, according to 14850.com. The Spencer Gifts store at the Shops at Ithaca Mall will close this weekend, ending a run that dates back to the mall’s 1976 opening.
Staff confirmed the store’s final day is Sunday, Jan. 18. A closing sign directs customers to nearby locations or online shopping.
Spencer Gifts started as a mail-order novelty business in 1947 and later grew into a national mall fixture. Its departure marks another retail loss as the Ithaca Mall continues to shrink in the age of online shopping.
