A new funding showdown erupted after President Donald Trump warned he could cut money to sanctuary cities, according to Spectrum News. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said he’s taking his case straight to the White House to protect city dollars.
Trump said federal payments could stop as soon as Feb. 1. Mamdani said he’s reached out directly, arguing New York City relies on those funds for housing, health care, and public safety.
Gov. Kathy Hochul struck a harder tone, warning the state would sue if Washington follows through. Budget experts noted past threats often fizzled but said cities should still prepare.
