More money is headed to local classrooms after renewed pressure, according to The Ithaca Voice. Cornell University agreed to raise its voluntary contribution to the Ithaca City School District to $700,000 this year.
District leaders said the payment-in-lieu-of-taxes deal will grow by $50,000 a year through 2028, then smaller increases through 2031. The boost follows a school board push for more funding from the tax-exempt university.
Critics argue Cornell’s payments still fall far below what it would owe in property taxes. District officials welcomed the increase and said talks with Cornell will continue as budget planning moves forward.
