New liquor rules shake up nightlife

Axe-throwing bars and other hybrid venues just got clarity they’ve wanted for years, according to Spectrum News 1. New York’s State Liquor Authority rolled out sweeping rule changes aimed at modernizing Prohibition-era liquor laws.

The updates clearly allow adult-oriented recreation spots to qualify for liquor licenses, create a new license for independent alcohol brands, and establish a category for private for-profit clubs and corporate dining rooms. Starting in March, bars and restaurants can also buy up to six bottles a week from retail liquor stores to avoid costly bulk purchases.

State officials say the changes boost flexibility for businesses while keeping safety standards intact. Operators say the reforms bring long-needed certainty as nightlife continues to evolve.
