Tariffs squeeze Upstate manufacturers

Seven months of tariffs are already changing how upstate factories operate, according to Spectrum News. A new survey shows uncertainty pushing companies to slow hiring and raise prices for customers.

The Buffalo Niagara Manufacturing Alliance, partnering with the Manufacturing Association of the Southern Tier, surveyed about 1,000 manufacturers statewide. About 26% responded, reporting mixed new orders, softer hiring plans, and a clear negative impact from tariffs.

Only 17% of respondents saw any growth since the first survey. Alliance leaders plan another follow-up in May as trade uncertainty continues.
