House defies GOP leaders to extend ACA aid

Seventeen Republicans broke ranks Thursday to help Democrats pass a bill restoring expired Affordable Care Act subsidies, according to the Associated Press.

The 230-196 vote bypassed House Speaker Mike Johnson’s opposition after a rare discharge petition forced the issue onto the floor. The move comes as millions face rising insurance premiums after COVID-era subsidies ended last year.

The bill, which would extend aid for three years, heads to the Senate — where bipartisan talks are underway on a more limited plan. Key GOP senators want income limits and health savings account expansions before signing on.
