The diocese introduced John S. Bonnici, 60, as its next bishop after his appointment by Pope Leo XIV. Bonnici replaces Salvatore Matano, who is retiring after more than a decade leading the diocese.

Bonnici, a former auxiliary bishop in New York City, said he plans to listen closely to parishioners while guiding the diocese forward. Both men addressed the church’s sexual abuse crisis, emphasizing accountability and long-term healing.

Matano will continue overseeing daily operations until Bonnici’s installation on March 19.
