State police are investigating a fatal snowmobile crash that happened New Year’s Day in Jefferson County.
Troopers responded to Waite Road in the town of Worth around 12:57 p.m. after receiving a report of a serious snowmobile accident.
State police later identified the victim as Joseph R. DiDomenico, 55, of Liverpool. He was pronounced dead at Samaritan Medical Center in Watertown.
Investigators said two males were operating snowmobiles on Junction 306, a snowmobile trail near Waite Road. One operator stopped along the trail and dismounted his snowmobile.
As the second operator came over a hill, he was unable to stop in time and struck the man who had stopped, police said. The second operator is a 16-year-old male from Liverpool.
State police said an evaluation showed no signs of impairment. At this time, investigators believe the crash was accidental.
Troopers were assisted at the scene by State Forest Rangers, the South Jefferson Rescue Squad, Town of Lorraine first responders, the Barnes Corners Snow-Pals Snowmobile Club, and S and R Automotive.
The investigation remains ongoing. State police extended condolences to the family and friends of DiDomenico.
