Family marks anniversary of deputies passing in Ontario County

Grief still grips a local family two years after a retired deputy died in a violent crash, according to News10NBC. Retired Deputy Thomas Doherty died instantly when a teen driver ran a stop sign in Farmington on Jan. 2, 2024.

Doherty rode with his partner, Kari Bittner, when the crash launched their car into a field at Route 441 and Canandaigua Road. Bittner said the moment replays in her mind daily, and she often returns to the roadside memorial marking where he died.

Doherty’s daughter, Bridget Turkington, said the lack of criminal charges still hurts, though the family continues a civil lawsuit. They now honor his memory through stories, humor, and a newborn grandson named Tommy.
