Hitting Syracuse’s low railroad bridges could soon sting far more than a ticket, according to WSTM. New state rules would slap drivers with eight license points for bridge strikes, targeting repeat crashes on the Onondaga Lake Parkway and Park Street bridges.
State data shows dozens of trucks have hit the Park Street CSX bridge since 2021. The New York DMV says the tougher penalties aim to curb dangerous driving and will roll out alongside a technology upgrade early this year.
The changes also hike points for speeding, phone use, and passing stopped school buses. AAA officials say the state wants accountability, while attorneys warn harsher rules could trigger more suspensions.
