A South Florida congresswoman insisted she did nothing wrong after a brief federal court appearance in Miami, according to the Associated Press. The case centers on accusations tied to millions in pandemic relief money.
Prosecutors charged Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick with conspiring to steal $5 million in federal COVID-19 funds linked to her family’s health care business. She pleaded not guilty, and a judge moved her arraignment to Jan. 20 at her request.
Investigators claim the money funded luxury purchases and campaign-related donations after an alleged overpayment in 2021. Cherfilus-McCormick remains free on bond, faces travel limits, and says she won’t resign.
