Finger Lakes Community College will roll out a free monthly webinar series focused on artificial intelligence and the workplace.
The series begins Tuesday, Jan. 13, with sessions held at noon on the second Tuesday of each month.
The first webinar will focus on AI bias and will be presented by FLCC associate professor Dave Ghidiu. The session will explore how artificial intelligence tools can reflect human mistakes and stereotypes found in the data used to train them.
Ghidiu will share ways to recognize and reduce bias in AI-generated text and images. The webinar will run 30 to 40 minutes and include a question-and-answer session.
The college will host the sessions on Zoom. Interested participants can register through the events calendar on the FLCC website.
Ghidiu previously presented on AI bias to faculty and staff at the Norman Howard School in Rochester.
“Our staff is not sure what to make of AI, nor do they feel comfortable with what its consequences are for thinking and learning,” said Nick Fargnoli, the school’s director of students. “Dave’s presentation allowed them to have a more informed opinion about how AI works and how to help students see its benefits and its limitations.”
The school later invited Ghidiu back for a deeper discussion.
“We asked him to discuss plagiarism and how AI detectors are a losing battle,” Fargnoli said. “He presented an alternative view of AI as a learning tool.”
Additional webinars are scheduled for Feb. 10 and March 10. Topics include using AI personas to build perspective and using NotebookLM to summarize and analyze information.
FLCC will record the webinars and share them on the college’s YouTube channel and the Finger Lakes TV network.
The series is part of the FLX AI Hub at FLCC, which launched earlier this year to expand access to artificial intelligence education, workforce training, and community programming.
