A massive data center proposal in Western New York could drive up electric bills across the state, according to the Democrat & Chronicle. The plan calls for a facility so energy-hungry it could power nearly 400,000 homes.
The developer, Stream Data Centers, wants to build a 2.2-million-square-foot complex at the STAMP industrial park. The project would consume about 500 megawatts of electricity — most of the site’s available power — raising concerns about higher costs for residential and business customers statewide.
Opposition is growing. The Tonawanda Seneca Nation says the facility threatens nearby land with noise, light, and runoff. Grid experts also warn New York’s already tight power supply could push prices higher.
