Push grows for Kyra’s Law: What is it?

Advocates want a child-safety custody bill folded into New York’s next budget after a toddler died during a court-ordered visit, according to Spectrum News 1.

The proposal, known as Kyra’s Law, would force courts to put a child’s safety first in custody and visitation decisions and require judges to complete training on domestic violence and child abuse. The bill passed the state Senate last year but stalled in the Assembly.

Kyra’s mother says adding it to Kathy Hochul’s executive budget could fast-track passage. State Sen. James Skoufis said the Senate would support keeping it in the final deal if the governor includes it.
