Syracuse RB Yasin Willis to enter transfer portal

Syracuse running back Yasin Willis announced Tuesday that he will enter the transfer portal, ending a two-year stint with the Orange. Willis emerged as SU’s top rusher in 2025, finishing with 558 yards on 129 carries after taking over the starting role from LeQuint Allen Jr.

Willis is the most prominent Syracuse player to enter the portal so far this offseason. While several others, including wide receivers Emanuel Ross and Jaylan Hornsby, linebacker Derek McDonald and quarterback Luke Carney, have also announced their departures, none played as central a role in the Orange’s offense. He appeared poised to be a key piece moving forward, especially with expectations of a healthy Steve Angeli returning at quarterback.

During Syracuse’s eight-game skid to close the season, Willis publicly stated his intention to come back in 2026, pointing to discussions with Angeli and optimism about building a more explosive offense. Instead, his decision leaves Syracuse thin at running back. With Willis gone, the room currently includes Tylik Hill and Malachi Coleman, while Malachi James and Jaden Hart are also expected to enter the portal. Will Nixon’s status remains uncertain as he awaits a ruling on a potential medical hardship waiver.

Head coach Fran Brown, who helped flip Willis’ commitment from Pittsburgh after arriving at Syracuse in December 2023, will likely need to address the position through the portal. Willis totaled 130 yards as a freshman before stepping into the lead role last season. Despite a strong opener against then-No. 24 Tennessee, offensive struggles and injuries limited his impact, making his departure a significant development for Syracuse heading into 2026.
