Hochul backs tough new AI safety law

Gov. Kathy Hochul is set to sign New York’s first major AI safety law, putting Big Tech on notice, according to POLITICO. After tense negotiations, the final version of the RAISE Act will force developers of powerful AI tools to report major safety issues within 72 hours — or face million-dollar fines.

The law targets industry giants like OpenAI, Meta, Google, and Microsoft, and creates a new oversight office to monitor compliance.

Compared to California’s similar law, New York’s version is stricter and arrives just as states push back on President Trump’s efforts to weaken AI regulation.
