A $1 million donation from philanthropist Tom Golisano won’t save the Beverly Animal Shelter in Waterloo, according to the Finger Lakes Times. Shelter leaders say only $250,000 of the gift was used before plans to close the facility were finalized. The rest is either being returned or never allocated.
Board president Pat Morrin says the shelter can’t continue because it doesn’t own the building—property inherited by Caitlin Reese, who recently canceled the lease. That disqualifies the shelter from state aid for facility upgrades.
As the April closure looms, towns are scrambling to replace lost dog control services, and the shelter is working to rehome all animals. Remaining assets will go to other nonprofits.
