The Buffalo Sabres extended their season-best win streak to five with a 3-2 shootout victory over the New York Islanders on Saturday night at KeyBank Center. Josh Norris scored the decisive goal in the fifth round.
Tage Thompson continued his stellar play, scoring for the sixth consecutive game. His goal in the second period gave Buffalo a 2-0 lead and marked the second time this season he’s recorded a six-game goal streak, joining Auston Matthews as the only players since 2021-22 to achieve multiple six-game streaks in a single season.
Buffalo’s power play was effective early, with Rasmus Dahlin weaving through the Islanders’ defense on the first opportunity to score, assisted by Alex Lyon. Josh Norris also found the net on a power play in the opening period, though the goal was waved off on a questionable goalie interference call involving Zach Benson. The Sabres’ power play has been strong in December, scoring 10 times on 36 opportunities, with Norris contributing six points since his return from injury.
Alex Lyon was instrumental in the win, stopping 32-of-34 shots and making four saves in the shootout, continuing his role as the starter during the team’s win streak.
Late-period lapses continue to be a concern, as the Islanders scored in the final minute of both the second and third periods to force extra time. Despite that, Buffalo showed resilience, proving they can compete with playoff-caliber teams.
The Sabres look to make it six straight wins on Sunday when they visit the New Jersey Devils at 7 p.m.
