A proposed data center in Lansing hit a major zoning hurdle after a marathon public hearing, according to The Ithaca Voice. TeraWulf is asking town officials to classify its planned Cayuga Lake-area data center as either a scientific research lab or a warehouse to fit local zoning rules.
Town code officials previously ruled data centers aren’t allowed in the industrial zone. At a tense zoning board meeting, critics mocked the research claim and raised environmental, legal, and cryptocurrency concerns, while company leaders insisted the facility qualifies as a research lab.
The zoning board took no vote and scheduled a decision for Dec. 22. The ruling will determine whether the project can move forward or remains blocked.
