State senate pushes school aid, ICE limits

With budget season approaching, state education leaders want Albany to build on last year’s school funding overhaul, according to Spectrum News. Senate Education Chair Shelley Mayer is urging the state to protect Foundation Aid levels and expand recent fixes as tax revenue comes in higher than expected.

Mayer says districts should see no cuts and possibly at least a 3% increase, while pushing for more support for English language learners, homeless students, and updated regional cost calculations. School advocates warn the state shouldn’t abandon reforms started after years of outdated data.

Mayer is also backing legislation to bar ICE from entering schools without a judicial warrant, saying lawmakers must act quickly to protect students statewide.
