A stranded deer got a second chance after firefighters stepped onto thin ice in the Finger Lakes, according to newyorkupstate.com. Ithaca firefighters helped state environmental officers rescue a deer stuck on the frozen Cayuga Inlet earlier this month.
Wearing ice rescue gear, a firefighter carefully crossed the ice, secured the animal, and pulled it back to shore. Crews guided the deer to safety and confirmed it wasn’t injured.
Officials used the rescue to warn the public about unpredictable ice conditions. They urge people to avoid frozen waterways unless ice thickness meets safety guidelines.
