State police arrested an Oswego County man following a long-running identity theft investigation that began in Wayne County.
Troopers said the case stemmed from a complaint reported in the town of Red Creek, where a victim discovered credit accounts opened without permission.
State police identified the suspect as Thomas R. Alnutt, 35, of Oswego. Troopers charged him with second-degree identity theft, a felony.
According to state police, the investigation began in November after the victim learned that multiple credit cards had been opened using their personal information. Financial institutions contacted the victim about balances owed on accounts the victim said they never opened.
Investigators determined the accounts were created without authorization. State police said financial records confirmed the fraudulent activity.
Troopers arrested Alnutt by appointment Saturday at State Police Wolcott. Authorities said the arrest occurred without incident.
Alnutt received an appearance ticket and is scheduled to appear in Wolcott Town Court at 11 a.m. Thursday.
