Hochul backs medical aid in dying bill

Gov. Kathy Hochul says New Yorkers with terminal illnesses should have the right to choose how they die, according to the Times Union.

After hearing emotional pleas and reflecting on her own mother’s painful ALS death, Hochul announced her support for the Medical Aid in Dying Act. The bill allows terminal patients with less than six months to live to end their lives with medical assistance — under strict conditions.

New safeguards include psychological evaluations, a five-day waiting period, and bans on anyone who stands to benefit financially from acting as a witness. Hochul plans to sign the amended bill once lawmakers return to Albany.
