Firefighters will trade hoses for handbells this weekend as a friendly competition returns to Geneva.
Three local fire departments are teaming up with The Salvation Army for the “Battle of the Bells,” a fundraising effort that puts community pride on the line while supporting local programs.
Each department will ring bells at a different location around the city, and the public decides the winner by how much they donate.
Hydrant Hose Company No. 1 will ring Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. near the Smith Opera House. Nester Hose Company No. 1 will also ring Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Padulla’s. White Springs Fire Association will take its turn Saturday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Walmart food door.
Every dollar dropped into the kettles supports Salvation Army programs that serve local residents throughout the year.
Beyond helping neighbors in need, the event adds a competitive twist. The department that raises the most money will earn bragging rights as this year’s Battle of the Bells champion.
Salvation Army organizers are encouraging residents to stop by, cheer on the firefighters, and give what they can.
Whether people donate a little or a lot, each contribution helps make a difference in Geneva—one bell ring at a time.
