Former coach gets probation in student sex case

A former Wayne County high school basketball coach avoided prison time after pleading guilty to a sex crime involving a student.

Dean Schott II, 55, received a sentence of 10 years of probation after pleading guilty to third-degree criminal sexual act, according to the Wayne County District Attorney’s Office.

The case stems from allegations involving a student dating back to April 2019. Schott worked for the Lyons Central School District for 22 years and served as the boys varsity basketball coach.

The school district said it received a report on April 8 alleging Schott had an inappropriate relationship with a student several years earlier. Law enforcement escorted him off campus during the school day after the report surfaced, according to Sheriff Rob Milby.

District officials said Schott resigned immediately and found no evidence that any current students were involved.

In addition to probation, the sentence requires Schott to register as a sex offender. The court also issued a final order of protection for the victim.

“The victim’s courage in coming forward exposed a serious abuse of trust,” District Attorney Christine Callanan said in a statement. “Individuals placed in positions of authority and access to our children carry an absolute responsibility to protect them, not exploit them.”

She said the sentence ensures Schott will not have the opportunity to harm another student and that her office will continue to hold offenders accountable.
