Police officers swapped patrol cars for shopping carts as smiles filled a Newark Walmart during Wayne County’s annual Shop with a Cop event.
The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office spent the day shopping with local children as part of its yearly effort to bring some holiday cheer to families who could use extra help.
Deputies said the event is their favorite time of year. School resource officers work with local school districts to identify children who may benefit from extra support during the holidays. The goal stays simple: give kids a fun day and a brighter season.
Walmart helped make that possible by donating stockings and turkeys to each family of a child sponsored by the sheriff’s office. Officers shopped alongside the kids, talked, laughed, and shared the experience together.
Parents and community members quickly filled social media with messages of thanks.

“Just wanted to say a special thank you to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office,” wrote Matthew F. Gorall. “My daughter had a very nice time shopping… We thank you for this great opportunity to get kids involved with officers.”
Others echoed the same appreciation.
“Thank you Wayne County Sheriff’s Department for your service and compassion and generosity,” Deb Baker wrote. “I’m sure you have made many children and families smile today.”
Several shoppers who happened to be in the store said the mood stood out.
“My husband and I were at Walmart today while this event was occurring,” Kristin Hoogland wrote. “Everyone seemed so happy and really enjoying themselves.”
Families said the impact goes beyond gifts. Parents talked about kids meeting deputies, support dogs, and even Santa, and forming positive connections with law enforcement that will last long after the holidays end.
