Seneca Meadows landfill faces crucial Dec. 31 deadline

New York’s largest landfill may hit a turning point on Dec. 31, when its state permit, town law, and financial agreement all expire, according to Finger Lakes Times.

Seneca Meadows Inc. has applied for a 47-acre expansion to keep operating through 2040, but Local Law 3 mandates closure on Dec. 31, and the state has yet to approve the expansion. While landfill officials expect the DEC to extend the current permit, a pending court ruling on the town law could shape the outcome.

Opponents insist the landfill must close, citing health and environmental concerns, while the town stands to lose millions in annual payments if it does. A special board vote is set for Dec. 29 on a proposed new host agreement.
