Massive upgrades to New York’s aging power grid are underway — and every resident will help pay for it, according to the Times Union.
More than $4 billion is going into 62 transmission projects to meet rising energy demand from AI data centers, factories, and solar farms — often located in rural areas with outdated infrastructure. Utilities like National Grid say the improvements will support clean energy, lower long-term costs, and open up economic opportunities.
But the plan comes with controversy. Customers will see yearly surcharges up to $64, and critics argue the costs aren’t shared fairly. Some warn utilities are profiting too much, and question whether the chosen upgrades actually match the state’s renewable energy needs.
