Geneva General Hospital has added a nationally recognized cancer surgeon to its medical staff, expanding specialized care in the Finger Lakes.
Ryan Fields, MD, a surgical oncologist and researcher, will treat patients at Geneva General Hospital alongside Brian Riesenberger, PA-C.
Fields focuses on complex cancers, including pancreatic, liver, stomach, biliary, and soft tissue cancers. His practice also includes a wide range of skin cancers, such as melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and Merkel cell carcinoma.
He serves as chair of the Department of Surgery at the University of Rochester Medical Center, surgeon-in-chief at Strong Memorial Hospital, and associate director for translational research at the Wilmot Cancer Institute.

“This is a shining example of how the affiliation with the University of Rochester continues to bring more specialized, collective care directly to Geneva and the rest of the Finger Lakes region,” said Jose Acevedo, MD, MBA, president and CEO of UR Medicine Finger Lakes Health.
Fields supports a collaborative approach to cancer care and brings experience with complex diagnoses in multidisciplinary settings. Before joining the University of Rochester, he served as chief of surgical oncology at Washington University in St. Louis and co-led the Melanoma & Cutaneous Oncology Program at the Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Center.
Fields earned his medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine. He completed a general surgery residency at Barnes-Jewish Hospital/Washington University and a surgical oncology fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
Riesenberger earned his master’s degree in physician assistant studies from Weill Cornell Medical College and a biology degree from St. John Fisher College.
The team will work closely with board-certified dermatologists at Geneva General Dermatology. They will see patients at 200 North Street, Suite 304, in the medical office building next to the hospital. Appointments are available by calling 585-275-1611.
